In this photo, the outer of two hurricane levees along the Mississippi River was
breached and repaired, but the water trapped between the two levees continues to
inundate small towns along the river, including the town of Nairn, Louisiana, to the
right of the levee. Debris from the surrounding marshland, mainly cane grass, has blown
up against the levee. This debris includes dead animals, personal possessions of
residents, pieces of boats, building materials, and household items. Flying over this
landscape, observers can smell a strong stench of decaying organic materials.
