SSC Evening Report Tuesday and Wednesday, 22 and 23 February, 1994

SITUATION UPDATE/ACTIVITIES TODAY: (Tuesday/Wednesday, 22/23 FEB 94) More
submerged oil was discovered in Zone 18C. Divers estimate that with current
resources it will take approximately 10 days to complete all the cleanup off of
the Shacks Beach area. They estimate that approximately 1000 bags (1/2 gunny
sack) of oil exists in this area. Some fish and one oiled and distressed octopus
was observed from underwater video in the vicinity of the oil mat. A CRRT
conference call was held today. No new issues were raised. Sand washing at the
Caribe Hilton will begin Friday (25 FEB). No decision will be made with regard
to borrowing sand from other locations until after the sand washing is observed.
If the sand washing is effective then all sands will be washed or landfarmed.
No additional shoreline inspections or sign-offs are scheduled at this time. A
videotape which was used to record the overflight to the scuttle site on 18 FEB
and 23 FEB was Fedexed to MASS for their review and commentary.

FUTURE PLANS:
Demobilization is now beginning as shoreline zones shift from cleanup to
monitoring and maintenance in most areas. A ceremony is planned for the Puerto
Rico Tourism Board to present the USCG with a certificate of their appreciation
tomorrow (24 FEB). NOAA HAZMAT has distributed the Shoreline Zone Summary
reports and is beginning to demobilize. NOAA HAZMAT will depart Friday.
Confirmed weather forecast support may be discontinued as of Friday (25 FEB).
