THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS BASED ON THE MOST CURRENT DATA PROVIDED TO NOAA. -
EVENING REPORT WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH
VALDEZ: Situation: Kennedy worked on briefing material for SSC overlap.
Christopherson attended ISCC meeting. Tonight is the last science meeting in
Valdez.
KODIAK: (Talbott) Situation: Cleanup operations continue in the Kodiak zone.
Current plans call for field operations (active cleanup) to cease in 8 10 days.
Most of the USCG effort is concentrated on the demobilization of treated beaches
and inventorying the impact status of other beaches. The weather was good on the
Eastern side of Kodiak Island and Shuyak but fog prevented operations on the
Alaska Peninsula and Southwest Kodiak. The Commandant of the Coast Guard of
Costa Rica was briefed on the spill response efforts in the Kodiak zone and
given a tour of the command center.
Flights / Beach Surveys: Several flights for demobilization and beach impact
status were conducted. All flights were in the field at the time of this report.
Meetings: The public meeting is now scheduled for each Wednesday at 1000. No
new developments came out of this weeks meeting.
Plans for Tomorrow: Continue field inspections. Update the shoreline tracking
documents and coordinate winter plan implementation with ISCC agencies.
SEWARD: (McGee) SITUATION: Mechanical cleanup operations were suspended during
the past several days due to weather. However Type A cleaning at Hoof Point,
and touch up work was completed in the Pye Islands. Demobilization in all but
one segment of the Seward zone has commenced and is scheduled for completion by
15 September. At 0900 and 1000 the MAC and R MAC meetings were held. The main
topics centered on the status of the winter shoreline cleanup and monitoring
plan. EXXON announced that there were still some issues to be resolved and that
a complete status report would be available for the MAC and R MAC on Friday, 8
September. The SSC was requested by the FOSC rep to meet with the land managers
and identify priority habitats that had 'no cleanup' recommendations because of
nesting area or pinneped haulout areas and to recommend reevaluation by EXXON in
the spring, winter or summer or when appropriate dates are established. This
task will be completed in two working days.
MEETINGS: MAC and R MAC and several informal meetings were held and discussed
above.
PLANS FOR TOMORROW NOAA/USCG, ADEC, CHUGACH, and NPS will meet and prioritize
winter treatment recommendations for various areas in the Seward zone and
present those findings to the FOSC representative.
