- Global Positioning System (GPS)
- A
satellite-based radio navigation system developed by the U.S.
Department of Defense. The system is formed by 24 satellites orbiting
the earth at very high altitude, and their corresponding receivers on
the earth. The GPS satellites transmit signals that allow one to
determine the latitude and longitude of a receiver on earth by
computing the time difference for signals from different satellites to
reach the receiver. GPS is used in air, land and sea navigation,
mapping, surveying and other applications where precise positioning is
necessary.
